The dawn of a new era in eCommerce authentication

Strong eCommerce fraud prevention with 3D Secure 2

What is 3D Secure 2?
Credit card authentication, but better!
3D Secure 2 (3DS2) is the new authentication protocol for online card payments. 3DS2 is designed to improve upon 3D Secure 1 (3DS1) by addressing the old protocol's pain points, and delivering a much smoother and integrated user experience. Registration of card and password is not required by the cardholder, unlike in 3DS1.
What is great about 3D Secure 2 (3DS2)?

More sales with less friction

With 3DS2's frictionless flow, cardholders can authenticate themselves without being challenged. This quick and painless checkout process will benefit cardholders, while merchants can expect up to 66% less cart abandonment rates, according to Visa.

More data = greater authentication accuracy
With 10x more data collected, issuers can more accurately determine a transaction's risk. As a result, Visa's case study shows 95% of transactions are approved straight away, and cardholders will experience 40% less fraud.

Built for mobile first
Gone are browser redirection and poorly scaled challenge screens. 3DS2 adds support for authentication in mobile apps. This means challenge screens can be presented from within the merchant's app, while looking and feeling just like a part of the app.

3D Secure 2 flow
3D Secure 2 messages flow between the cardholder, the 3DS Server, Directory Server (operated each card scheme), and the issuing bank. In summary, information about the transaction at hand, the cardholder's browser or mobile device, as well as the cardholder's account history with the given merchant are all collected and eventually passed on to the issuing bank. Responses are then returned to the cardholder via the same route. Challenge messages will occur directly between the cardholder and issuing bank in case a challenge is required.

PSD2 and Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)

Revised Payment Service Directive (PSD2) in EU

The Revised Payment Service Directive (PSD2) in EU was introduced to promote new types of payment services, and enhance customer protection and security. PSD2 has set out deadlines for businesses to comply with its regulations.

Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)

Businesses that operate within the European Union will soon have to comply with SCA regulation changes that can have a significant impact on how business is conducted. SCA promotes the use of two-factor authentication and implementing 3DS2 is commonly agreed to be the best method to comply with SCA.
